| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Esther Kahn |
ESTHER KAHN is a French/British production cowritten and directed by Arnaud Desplechin in 2000.
Esther Kahn is one of the three daughters of Ytzhok Kahn, a small Jewish tailor working in a poor district of London. Esther works in the family business but is already rather an eccentric figure in the family. She doesn't read, barely knows to write and likes to observe and imitate people. After having seen a play in a local Jewish theatre, she finally knows what she wants to do with her life: she will become a stage actress.
A few months later, Esther gets a walk-on part in a production and leaves the family apartment. Helped by the old actor Nathan Quellen, she will practice alone at night and soon manages to earn her life in the business. She becomes a reliable understudy for leading actresses and, thanks to the writer Philippe Haygard, gets the leading part of Ibsen's Hedda Gabler.
