Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Island of the Blue Dolphins
Karana is a young native woman living on an island off the coast of California with her tribe. But trouble starts when white men visit the island. When a dispute between the visitors and the tribe occurs over the right to hunt otter, the tribe finds itself in danger and decides to leave the island. They set off on a ship, but Karana's younger brother Ramo jumps into the ocean. Karana jumps off to save him, and they find themselves stranded on the island.

Then, Ramo is killed by wild dogs. Karana finds herself isolated on the island. While she waits for rescue, she must risk hunting in order to survive, even though it is forbidden for women in her tribe. Can Karana survive long enough for help to come?
