Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are brothers who comprise the hit singing group, Alvin and the Chipmunks. But Alvin is highly competitive, and soon he gets into a fight with Brittany, lead singer of the Chipettes (a group that includes her sisters Jeanette and Eleanor).
Two diamond smugglers, Klaus and Claudia, overhear their argument (which is basically a boys vs. girls ordeal) and realize it is the perfect opportunity to trick the kids. They convince the Chipmunks and the Chipettes to go on a hot-air balloon race around the world to decide who's better. Unknowingly, the kids will really be picking up smuggled diamonds at each of the various stop points around the globe.
The Chipmunks and the Chipettes get into various predicaments as they race around the world, usually involving whatever locals they meet. But when the two singing groups realize they are being used by criminals, can they put their petty arguments aside and team up to stop the bad guys?
