| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Cry Freedom |
Cry Freedom is a biopic of South African activist Steve Biko, played by Denzel Washington, during Apartheid in the 1960s and 70s.
Kevin Kline plays Donald Woods, a white journalist living with his wife and children in South Africa who is critical of Biko at first. But then the two men become friends, and together they fight for an end to Apartheid.
The political ramifications are great for both men. Woods finds himself and his family threatened. Biko is arrested by police and while in their custody, suffers a massive head injury which later kills him. It is a grisly death which outrages the world and becomes symbolic of Aparteid struggles.
Woods realizes that he must carry on the fight for Biko. He wants to expose the truth behind his gruesome death at the hands of the police, but can't in South Africa. If he wants to publish a book about it, he and his family must make a daring illegal escape out of the country.
