| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Phantom of the Opera (1925) |
This is the original 1925 silent film that made Lon Chaney a star. Two new managers take over the Paris Opera House and soon find themselves flooded by letters from someone claiming to be the legendary Phantom of the Opera. They dismiss it until the lead singer disapears and her only replacement is a chorus girl named Christine Daae (Mary Philbin). When her old flame Raoul (Norman Kerry) attempts to see her, he finds her dressing room empty.
Christine has instead been taken by Erik, The Phantom of the Opera (Lon Chaney). Christine learns he is a disfigured composer who is not only in love with her, but determined to stop Raoul from seeing her. But Raoul and Christine fall in love and the Phantom takes matters into his own hands. He crashes the Opera Houses chandelier and forces Raoul to descend into his lair for a final showdown.
