| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Kind Lady |
Kind Lady stars Ethel Barrymore as Mary Merries, a rich, elderly woman who enjoys her lavish posessions. Maurice Evans portrays the seemingly starving artist Henry Springer Elcott. Henry meets Mary when he admires her elaborate door knocker and inquires about its origin. Mary sees Henry again painting in the park and she invites him to visit her. When Henry does, he brings some paintings and steals her expensive cigarette case but then has seconds thoughts and returns it to her. Mary soon feels bad for Henry as he hasn't done well with his paintings and he, his wife, and their baby live in a rundown apartment. Mary pays Henry some money for his paintings. When Henry drops by to deliver some more he goes to show Mary his wife who is across the street in the park. At just that precise moment she faints. Out of concern for the woman and her baby, Mary lets them stay. But it soon becomes her downfall as Henry ties Mary up and starts to sell her prized posessions posing as her concerned nephew.
