| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about East-West |
EAST-WEST (Est - Ouest) is a French drama co-written and directed by Régis Wargnier in 1999.
In 1946, Alexeï Golovine, his French wife Marie and their son accept the proposition of the Russian government to leave France and come back to Russia to take part in the reconstruction of the country, devastated by WWII. When they finally arrive by boat in Odessa, most of the passengers are arrested by the Russian police and Alexeï must promise to the authorities to become a model citizen if he doesn't want Marie to be arrested and accused of being a spy of the West.
The Golovine family quickly understands that they have made a mistake by coming in Russia. They must live in a one-room apartment in Kiev and look out for each word or act as anybody in the house could be an informer. Marie manages to meet the famous French actress Gabrielle on tour in the country who promises to help her. During the following months, Marie will help Sacha, a young neighbour, to find a way to secretly leave Russia but she's arrested and sent to a prisoner camp. Ten years later, Gabrielle has finally managed to organize the evasion of Marie thanks to one of her close friends, the French Ambassador in Sofia, Bulgaria who's just been nominated.
