Lenny (Charles Grodin), a young New Yorker, meets a pretty girl (Jeannie Berlin) in a bar, falls in love, and quickly gets married. Too quickly perhaps, as he soon begins to think. The newlyweds head to Miami for their honeymoon, and Lenny's wife is just no longer so fascinating as he had first thought. In fact, she irritates and annoys him. By the time they get to Miami beach, Lenny knows he's made a mistake.
His wife gets sunburned and has to stay in the hotel for a while. Lenny goes to the beach alone, and guess what? – meets the girl of his dreams. Kelly (Cybill Shepherd) is gorgeous, sexy, well-mannered, and rich. Immediately throwing his 3-day-old marriage away, Lenny starts pursuing her with lies, pretense, occasional brutal honesty (for a change), and more lies. When Kelly goes to her home in Minnesota, Lenny follows. He meets her parents and makes his intentions known to them: as soon as he takes care of certain “complications” he plans to claim Kelly's hand in marriage. Her parents are not thrilled with the prospect, but Lenny proceeds to go full-speed, working on charming Kelly and her folks and dumping his wife. Eventually, he succeeds – only to start getting bored with Kelly as well shortly after the wedding.
