| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Leave Her to Heaven |
Ellen Berent (Gene Tierney) always gets what she wants. She wants Richard Harland, and she gets him. But, it isn't enough. She wants his love all to herself, and is insanely jealous of anyone else he has affection for. Richard has a younger brother, Danny, who is disabled. Richard and Danny are very close, so one day, Ellen takes Danny swimming and then watches him as he develops a cramp and drowns. Later on Richard discovers what she did, but she convinces him that she did it because she loved him. He stays married, but his love for her is gone. So, Ellen gets pregnant, hoping that will rekindle his love. Only, he starts paying too much attention to the unborn child, so she throws herself down the stairs, killing the baby. Meanwhile, Richard has gotten close to Ellen's cousin, Ruth. Knowing that she'll never have Richard's attention completely, Ellen commits suicide. But, her revenge isn't over. She's framed Ruth from beyond the grave.
