| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The World's Fastest Indian |
This film focuses on septuagenarian Burt Munro (Anthony Hopkins), a motorcycle enthusiast from New Zealand. For 25 years, he has wanted to race in Speed Week at Salt Lake in Utah. The film follows Burt as he pursues his dream.
First, we see him putting the finishing touches on his meticulously reconstructed bike (the Indian of the title). Then he and the bike travel half-way around the world by ship, with Burt paying his way as the cook. After landing in L.A., the genial Burt befriends a succession of strangers(including a randy widow -- for sex) as he makes his way across the desert.
Once at the salt flats, though, Burt becomes embroiled in a bureaucratic snafu regarding his eligibility to race. However, he's already made friends with the other racers, despite the disparity in their ages, and they rally to his defense. The rest of the film details how Burt manages to carry out his life-long dream.
