Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Young Savages
The Young Savages stars Burt Lancaster as district attorney Hank Bell. He's assigned to a racially charged case in which three Italian members of the Thunderbird gang murder a blind Puerto Rican boy. The movie opens up with set teenagers walking over into what is considered Puerto Rican turf and pull out switch blades. Without provocation they all stab Roberto Escalante while he hung out on the stoop. What the boys didn't know was that they were being followed by Angela Rugiello (Jody Fair). The young hoodlums get picked up by the cops right away and then get questioned by Bell and Lt. Gunderson (Telly Savalas). Bell finds out that one of the boys is not only underaged, but also the son of his former lover Mary di Pace. This causes a conflict as Mary pleads with Bell that her son is innocent, but Bell must unravel the truth. It all breaks down in a ho-hum courtroom drama where Roberto wasn't as innocent as it first seemed.
