| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Dark Victory |
Judith Traherne is a carefree, wealthy young woman who keeps getting terrible headaches and numbness in her fingers. She's finally persuaded to go see a doctor. Dr. Steele finds that she has a tumor and he needs to operate. Unfortunately, the operation doesn't work. Dr. Steele tells Judith's friend, Ann, that Judith will seem perfectly fine for months until she relapses. Dr. Steele decides to keep the news from Judith, because he's fallen in love with her and wants her last months to be happy. Judith has a new lease on life after the operation, and has also fallen in love with Dr. Steele. They decide to marry. But, she accidentally discovers the truth about her prognosis. Dr. Steele tells her that she should try to make her life meaningful so that it won't be wasted when she has to die. Judith is too betrayed by the fact that he kept it a secret. She goes off on a wild spree of drinking and partying. She realizes that she's scared, and that this is no way to live her life. She marries Dr. Steele. She makes him promise to keep on going after her death, and to try and find a way to save others as his own personal victory over her death.
