| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sidewalks of London |
Charles (Charles Laughton) is happily making his way on the streets of London as a basker, or in othe words, a street performer. During one of his rather fruitless performances, he nets only a schilling. Then along comes a young street urchin named Liberty (Vivien Leigh)to snatch it right out of the hat then run. Charles chases her down only to chtch her stealing a cigarette case from a well known newspaper man named Mr. Prentiss (Rex Harrison). She again runs and he again follows her. She disappears into an old vacant mansion and believes that she has absconded with all of the loot free and clear. Feeling quite pleased with herself, she begins to dance in the open ballroom of the old house. Little does she know that Charles has followed her and he is watching. As he does, he becomes quite taken. A confrontation occurs, the police hear the scuffle and the couple flee to the saftey of Charles apartment. Liberty, then being homeless, has no place to go and Charles lets her stay.
As time passes the become comfortable in their arrangement and even create a street show with two other friends. Things are going great until Mr. Prentiss happens to show back up again. His pretense is to thank Charles for returning his "lost" cigarette case but the fact of the matter is he was quite taken with Liberty himself. He know that she wishes to be a great dancer and he capitalizes on that to get an "interview". He eventually works his way into Liberty's life and does make her famous.
In all of the glamor, poor old Charles is forgotten and becomes a broken man. Eventually Liberty begins to feel the pangs of guilt for her ungratefulness and tracks Charles down. He is in a rough state and she tries to get a job for him on stage. His drinking has affected his memory and he cannot orate in the same way that he used to. He soon realizes this and decides to go back to the streets where he is perfectly at home. It is then Liberty's turn to be heartbroken and as he walks away, she chases him down for one last fond kiss. Charles is overjoyed and he has realized his long awaited dream.
