| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about City For Conquest |
James Cagney is Danny, a New York trucker barely making ends meet. He decides to take up boxing, mainly to finance the musical education of his brother, Eddie, a talented pianist and composer. Danny is also hoping to make enough money to marry his longtime sweetheart, Peggy (Ann Sheridan). However, starry-eyed Peggy wants to pursue a career as a dancer, especially when she starts to win competitions with a slick partner (Anthony Quinn).
Danny turns out to be a winner in the ring, but he loses his sight in a dirty bout. Danny strives to make himself useful, and he serves as a role model for Eddie to realize his dream of appearing at Carnegie Hall.
While Danny's love for Peggy never wavers, he doesn't want her to see him after he's been hurt.
