Newton Davis is heartbroken after he builds a dream home for his childhood sweetheart, Becky (Dana Delany) and she refuses his marriage proposal. He leaves the house as is and goes back to the city. There he bumps into a waitress named Gwen (Goldie Hawn) during a business meeting. She pretends to not speak English and after the meeting is over he finds himself confiding in her about the house and the breakup. She then lets on that she really does speak English and this should have been Newton‘s first clue that she has a slight aversion to the truth. Somewhat upset over this, Newton leaves but does not wander far. The two walk through the rain together and he ends up at her place for the night. When she wakes the next day he is gone having only left the napkin drawing of his beautiful home.
Being everything she's ever wanted and feeling like such a pretty home should not go to waste, she seeks out the small town and the home. She quickly begins to settler herself in the empty house but soon finds that supplies are needed. Since she has no job and no money she invents a story for the store clerk saying the she is the new Mrs. Davis. Becky just so happens to be eavesdropping on the next aisle over and just about has a cow. She begins to question Gwen about how the meeting and marriage came about. Gwen continues to elaborate on the elaboration and the story grows into huge proportions. Becky's interest in Mr. Davis also begins to grow into huge proportions. Either Becky believes that she is seeing a side of Newton never before revealed or she is just the kind of woman who is only interested in another woman's man.
Gwen also unsuspectingly bumps into Newton's parents on a shopping trip. They are surprised and hurt that he has not told them of the happy event but they are also instantly taken with Gwen. By the time Newton finds out, the whole thing is wildly out of control. He is totally furious but Gwen talks him into allowing her to stay in the house while Newton uses the fake marriage to get Becky back. They plan a fake separation and divorce down the road but everyone keeps trying to get them to reconcile.
It all comes down to a wedding reception. There is a big blow up where Gwen leaves and Newton follows. The question is can he win her back or does he want her back after all that's happened? Maybe he is just making sure she actually gets on the bus. There is a happy ending for someone who ends up with a cottage being built across the lake but whom might that be?
