| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Black Cat |
Loosely based on a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, THE BLACK CAT was directed by Edgar G. Ulmer in 1934.
Peter and Joan Alison are honeymooners who make the acquaintance of Dr. Vitus Werdegast in the Orient Express. In Hungary, they share the same taxi which has soon an accident in the countryside. They seek refuge in Hjalmar Poelzig's house. Werdegast was made prisoner by the Russians 15 years before right here in Poelzig's house. In fact, it was Poelzig himself who betrayed Werdegast and thousand of Hungarians at that time. Now, Werdegast is waiting for the right moment to take revenge on Poelzig. meanwhile, the Alisons want to leave the house but understand, but too late, that Poelzig won't let them depart from his home before long.
