| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Enchanted Cottage |
This women's weepie is about the power of love.
The central character is a plain but kind-hearted woman, Laura Pennington, who works as a housekeeper at a cottage in Cornwall. There she meets Oliver Bradford, a former World War II pilot. Before the war, Oliver was a strapping, handsome man who was engaged to be married. In fact, he and his fiancee were supposed to move to the cottage after the wedding. However, Oliver returned from battle both physically and psychologically scarred, and he has retreated to the cottage by himself, bitter over his disfigurement.
Still, Laura falls for Oliver, and Oliver, in an effort to stay away from his insensitive family and former fiancee, asks Laura to marry him. At first, theirs is a marriage of convenience, but soon they begin to see each other as beautiful and unflawed, which they both attribute to a magical aura exuded by the cottage.
