Review Summary and Plot Commentary about I Am David
Set during the Cold War era, this film focuses on a 12-year-old Bulgarian boy named David, who has spent almost his entire life in a forced labor camp. David manages to escape, thanks to the help of an older prisoner, with only a loaf of bread, a compass, and an official-looking letter. Told to make his way to Denmark and trust no one, the boy stows away on a boat that carries him him to Southern Italy. There, on his own in the free world he's never before experienced, he heads north. Along the way, he meets an assortment of people. Some try to turn him over to the authorities, but others, such as a wealthy family living in the countryside, do their best to help David.
When David gets to Milan, he's befriended by an older woman. An amateur artist named Sophie, she gets David to pose for her, an act that eventually melts the boy's suspicious demeanor. By trusting Sophie, David is better able to reach his destination, where a surprise awaits him.
