| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The War At Home |
Based on James Duffs play "Homefront", The War At Home stars Emilio Estevez as despondent Vietnam War veteran Jeremy Collier. The movie starts in 1972 in Texas. Jeremy's mother Maurine (Kathy Bates) is making preparations for Thanksgiving and father Bob (Martin Sheen)is going off to work. Bob wantsJeremy to get a job and do something more than take two college classes. The laconic tries to reconnect with a girlfriend he had before he left to fight, but is unable to reach her. Back at home, Jeremy has one of many flashbacks to the war; ducking gunfire crawling through the jungles of Vietnam. Every one tries talking to Jeremy, but no on can get through to him as he sinks deeper and deeper into an abyss. The day of Thanksgiving arrives and everyone is dressed for the occassion but Jeremy insists on wearing his Army uniform. By the nights end, everyone in the family explodes with emotion as Jeremy appears to fall off the deep end. Jeremy finally lets out what was hurting him for so long, telling his father his true inner feelings. A gripping, emotional drama on the scars of war.
