| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Tristan and Isolde |
It begins over in England when Tristan is a young boy. The Irish come and attack, killing many including Tristan's parents. Tristan is almost killed as well but his father's friend King Marke saves him while losing one hand.
It then goes to Ireland to a funeral where Isolde is present as a little girl. Her mother (The Queen) has died. She now only has her father (The King) and her maid to look after her.
Cut to about fifteen years later. Both Tristan and Isolde are older. Britain gets attacked by Ireland again and they take a lot of the women and children. King Marke wants all the sections of Britain to join together to defeat Ireland because at the moment the are outnumbered. They stage an
attack on the Irish as they travel home to get back the stolen people. During that attack Tristan is stabbed with a sword that has puffer fish poison on it that goes into his insides. He is believed dead so they give him a kings funeral and put him on a burning boat in the ocean.
Isolde's father has promised her to one of his best soldiers (the one who stabbed Tristan) so she decides to run away. As she goes along the beach with her maid they come across Tristan and his boat washed up on the shore.
The take him to an abandoned shack and help him get better. Isolde tells Tristan that her name is something else. During this Isolde and Tristan fall in love but then an Irishman finds Tristan's boat so he has to quickly
sail back to his own country. Britain thought Tristan was dead and celebrate his return by naming him King Marke's second.
Ireland decides to hold a tournament with all the British countries. The winner gets his daughter, Isolde, as a wife for their king. Tristan is
chosen to compete for their side and has no idea who he is fighting for. He wins the tournament and realises who Isolde really is. They still love each other but can't be together because Isolde is promised is King Marke who is like a father to Tristan.
King Marke and Isolde get married. King Marke really loves Isolde but Tristan and Isolde begin an affair together. When King Marke finds out he is furious but Isolde explains to him that they loved each other before she even met Marke so he forgives them and gives them a boat to escape on. As this is happening, another war is raging on at the castle. Tristan knows it is his duty to fight in it.
