Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has retired from field work at IMF and is engaged to be married to Julia (Michelle Monaghan). He is asked to return to active duty by his superior John Musgrave (Billy Crudup) to help capture arms dealer Owen Davien (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) who is planning to sell something called Rabbit's Foot to terrorists in the Middle East.
