| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Ox-Bow Incident |
As cowboys Carter (Fonda) and Croft (Morgan) arrive in town to blow off a little steam at the local saloon, word arrives that local rancher Larry Kinkaide has been shot down; murdered while his cattle were stolen. Quickly news travels through the little town and a posse is formed to bring the killers to justice. Arthur Davies (Davenport), the general store proprietor is worried the quick to judge band of vigilantes will not await the arrival of the sheriff and they will take the law into their own hands.
It is a long, cold, and difficult ride to apprehend the rustlers, but the trail is well marked by the progress of the herd. Along the way Croft is wounded by a gunshot mistakenly fired in haste. Later Carter is reunited with his old-flame; a very pretty young woman named Rose (Hughes). Years earlier she promised to wait for him, but instead ran off to be wed to another fellow in San Francisco. Late that night the posse converges on the camp of Donald Martin (Andrews) and his men who are traveling with 60 head of cattle from Kinkaide's ranch. They claim to have bought the livestock but have no receipt and one of the men (Quinn) possesses Kinkaide's gun. It is now put to a vote whether the accused men will be taken back to town to stand trail or will that the law be served on the spot without a trial or judge.
