Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Matt's Million
Matt, a 12 year old English boy, suddenly receives a letter from a solicitor with a check enclosed, for over 1 million pounds. It turns out that a computer game Matt wrote over a year ago was purchased by someone and sold internationally, bringing good money. The million is Matt's share, and more money will keep coming in as the game continues to sell. Matt does not tell his mother right away, afraid that she will want him to put all the money in the bank and not spend any. Eventually he does tell her, and they agree that he would only spend the interest, which is not bad at all: the interest is over 300 pounds a day.

Matt begins by buying himself the best bike he can find. He also wants to buy one for Claire, his friend who knows about his fortune. Unexpectedly, instead of being happy Claire gets offended. She runs home and does not want to see Matt. The boy does not understand what he did wrong, so he turns for advice to the solicitor, Mr. Wattis. Mr. Wattis tries to explain that expensive gifts like that are not always appropriate, they can make people uneasy. Matt still does not see why, but he takes the solicitor's word for it and apologizes to Claire. They are friends again.

Matt's next lesson comes through a car. No longer satisfied with the bike, he wants a Rolls-Royce. However, the money he is allowed to spend is not enough to buy one, so he ends up hiring a Rolls-Royce with a driver to take him and Claire to school. Still feeling generous, Matt invites another boy to ride with them, the boy brings his big brother, and the brother brings his friends. Before Matt knows it, his car is packed with big bullies to whom he cannot say "no." It is easier for him to get rid of the car altogether, which he does. Eventually, Matt learns the simple truth that while having money is good, it does not guarantee happiness, and having your dreams come true is not always what you thought it would be like.
