| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Champ |
The Champ stars Wallace Beery as Andy 'Champ' Purcell, a boxer with a gambling and alcohol problem. The movie opens up with Champ and his son Dink (Jackie Cooper) jogging along a dirt road to get in shape for Champs next fight. But Champ can't keep away from drinking no matter how much his son Dink loves him. With promoters waiting for him at his apartment, Champ gets drunk at the worst possible time. The promoters shrug Champ off as a loser and Champ does his best to keep Dink's spirit up. The next day Dink gets a horse and they name him Little Champ. They enter him in a race, and it's at the track that Dink meets his estranged mother Linda (Irene Rich). The horse fgalls during the race and Champ loses all of his money. Linda's new husband makes Champ a monetary offer to let Linda see Dink. Champ agrees, and Dink goes to meet Linda in her beautiful home. After Champ loses the horse gambling, Linda's husband Tony goes to see Champ to ask him if he'd let dink stay with them, offer him a better life. After a bar brawl, Champ is in jail and soon realizes that Dink would have a better life with Linda. Though father and son would reunite for Champ's big fight, it wouldn't last long.
