After disobeying orders, a captain is removed from his ship.
However, when the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, The captain is cleared of wrong doing, promoted to admiral and put in charge of a fleet to overtake a japanese occupied island.
He gets is old crew back together. They overtake the Japs and claim the island.
Along the way, the admiral meets his son that he hasn't seen in 18 years and finally starts a relationship with him. He also meets a navy nurse and falls in love.
While planning to take another occupied island, the fleet discovers a fleet of 17 japanese ships heading toward them. They set up mine field, which takes out 3 of the jap ships. A fleet of pt boats takes out a few more of the jap ships, and the navy detroyers engage the rest of the jap fleet.
Most of the jap ships are destroyed; the ones that aren't retreat.
Most of the navy fleet is destroyed too, including the admiral's ship.
All but one of the admiral's men are killed. The admiral survived, but lost his leg. He awakens in a hospital ship and is told that his battle was a complete victory.
