Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Happy Endings
This is a story of love, sex, abortion, and sexual taboos; such as a step sibiling romp,"happy endings"- sex with a masseur, gay men, lesbians, 22 year old wonding if he is gay, sex for money and Lolita concepts. The vignettes intermingle with Mamie and Charlie starting out as step siblings who do it and she gets pregenant. This is where the abortion takes place, but as we find out later... there was no abortion and Charlie only finds out after he's 40+ years old. After himself having had a vasectomy at 21 and becoming gay. His gay lover Gil has 2 high friends (lesbians) that have a 2 year old boy. Charlie be comes convienced that the child is Gil's even though the friends claim the sperm Gil had donated years before did not work and they went to a sperm bank instead. Meanwhile back with Mamie after she and her lover a masseur do it on the massage table she gets a blackmail letter about her long lost supposed to be aborted son. The irony here is that her profession is as an abortion councelor. She meets the blackmailer, Nicky, who it turns out is trying to film a documentary about the reuniting of Mamie and her son so that he can get into AFI. She has seemingly no interest in her son or in being filmed. Yet she follows Nicky from the meeting and later she and Havier, the masseur, break into Nicky's hotel room to try and find out her son's name. Nicky catches them and a new blackmail plan is hatched. Mamie suggests Nicky film Havier an alien from Mexico and his 'happy endings'. There is also a sub-plot with Charlie, seems Jason Ritter's character is secretly in love with him and takes home security tapes from the restaurant showing Charlie mopping with just shorts on so he can jerk off to it. He runs the karaoke night at the restaurant where Jude (Magie Gyllenhaal) sings one night. Finding her voice incredible he asks her to join his band. She accepts and trys to turn him hetrosexual, although it was just her gold-digging plan to get to his rich homophobic father.
