| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Shopgirl |
Claire Danes is a 'SHOPGIRL' selling gloves at Sac's 5th Avenue LA.... a dying art. Therefore her time is spent with watching others and their relationship wanting and waiting.... She came to LA from Vermont a totaly entirely differnt world and she's been having trouble meeting people. Good, bad, indifferent people she just can't meet any. Then comes Jeremy (Jason Swartzman) at the laundry mat. A sort of freak yet a friendly freak therefore Mirebelle (Danes) gives him her number. Why not she says. Well when they go on their date they can't go IN the theater and they must sit outside and watch the highlife of the boardwalk, unless he borrows $2 and they split the costs. The walk to the door ends with the telling phrases "Can I kiss you or what? (Jeremy) - (Danes) "And the point would be???". Needless to say this has been a failure. Yet a while later Mirabelle decides she need servicing and who does she know... well Jeremy. Call him and various hyjinx happen regarding the call. He comes over to 'service' her. Yet just like the screw up he is he's brought a mint thinking it was a condom. All is not lost- he (embarressingly enough) borrows one form her neighbor. They do it; it is less than exciting.
Meanwhile back at work a dashing grey haired man (Steve Martin) comes in and wants to purchase a pair of gloves. She and he are instantly attracted. Neither have the balls to state it. Later after "Ray Porter" (Martin) has purchased and sent the gloves to.. you guessed it Mirabelle with a note asking her to dinner. She hesitates and then accepts... he's rich and doesn't want a full time relationship yet she's will to be his.. screw-girl. He pays with all this exsravagent dresses, gifts, etc. yet his guilt is transparent and she's sucked in.
Meanwhile Jeremy has been touring with a band and for whatever reason been listen ing to relationship tapes and books on CD. He's learned. He knows he treated Mirabelle like dootie and is driven to rectify it.
A story of LOVE unrequited on many different levels. And in the end is requited continually.
