| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Night of the Iguana |
John Huston directed this adaptation of Tennessee Wiliams' play about the Rev. T. Lawrence Shannon and his misadventures with a quartet of women.
Larry is a disgraced clergyman who's had trouble controlling his libido and now works as a guide for a low-rent travel company. Trouble ensues when he takes a busload of females from a Baptist women's college -- spinsters except for one teenaged temptress -- to Mexico. Charlotte, the sexpot (Lyon, in a role similar to the one she'd just played in Kubrick's Lolita), makes a play for Larry. This gets him into hot water with the girl's vindictive chaperone.
To avoid getting fired, Larry commandeers the tour bus and brings his charges to a remote hotel, run by his old friend Maxine, a lusty widow. Shortly after arriving, two more guests show up: Hanna, an unmarried artist pushing 40, and her elderly grandfather. Although Hanna seems prudish, especially in contrast with Maxine and Charlotte, she and the roguish Larry begin a tentative relationship.
