| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about You Came Along |
During World War II, Major Bob Collins, Captain "Shakespeare" Anders, and Lieutenant "Handsome Janoschek are on a war bonds tour. Although they all seem happy and goofy, Bob is dying, and the others are helping to keep up his spirits. At the start of the tour, they meet their chaperone from the Treasury Department. There's confusion because they thought they were meeting a man, I.V. Hotchkiss, but it turns out to be a woman, Ivy. The confusion is soon settled down, and Ivy spends her time trying to keep the three out of trouble as well as watch them as they hit on women all over the tour.
The guys see her as a good sport, and they gradually become friends. They agree that she'll be the special guest of each guy in a different city. Although Bob keeps interrupting the others and keeping Ivy to himself, she does manage to spend some time with Shakespeare, and finds out that Bob doesn't have long to live. Ivy is devastated, because she's falling in love with Bob. Bob is also falling in love with her. When they make a stop to attend her sister's wedding, they decide to get married, even though they know the marriage will be a short one. They spend their time together getting as much joy out of life as they can until the end.
