Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Nacho Libre
Ignacio (Nacho) is a young friar at a small religious orphanage where he grew up after his parents died. He wants to be a wrestler. When a pretty, young nun (Sister Encarnación) comes to teach at the orphanage, Nacho's desire to impress her gives him another reason to want to wrestle.
After the orphans' dinner chips are stolen from him by a skinny, wild man, Nacho sees the most famous wrestler in town in the street, being adored by the crowd. He also sees a sign advertising for wrestlers to fight the next week. The next day, Nacho returns to the place where the orphans' chips were stolen and convinces the skinny, wild man (Esqueleto) to join him as the other half of his wrestling tag team the next week.
Although they are badly beaten, they receive money anyway and continue to fight for many more weeks. Nacho buys better food for the orphans, as well as a few purchases for himself.
However, Nacho soon tires of losing and determines the only way for them to win is to receive instruction from the great wrestlers, which they can only do by becoming pro. After sneaking into a party thrown by the manager of one of the most famous luchadores, Nacho and Esqueleto learn that they can become pro by defeating a group of wrestlers the next week and earn the opportunity to fight the greatest luchadore, Nacho's former hero.
Before the match, Nacho is discovered by the other monks to be a wrestler, which lands him in big trouble. After a hard fight in the wrestling ring, Nacho loses the qualifying round. Evicted from the monastery and apparently unable to win anything, Nacho retreats into the "wilderness". He is soon found by Esqueleto, though, who tells him that the luchadore who defeated him in the qualifying match was injured, and Nacho will be able to take his place. Finally Nacho will have the ultimate opportunity to become famous, get money for his orphans and win a wrestling match.
