Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Posse
Mario Van Peebles plays Jesse, a black soldier in an infantry unit fighting in the Spanish-American War in 1898. Jesse is the squad leader of a band of rag-tag misfits, largely other black men. Their superior officer, played by Billy Zane, is a racist, who constantly mocks, berates, and degrades this black squad. One day he sends them on a dangerous mission for which they have no choice but to accept or he will see that they go to prison. Jesse and his friends accept but immediately start to plan their escape. The mission enables them to capture a hidden cache of gold coins and escape on the boat that takes the dead bodies back to the states by hiding in the caskets. Back on the mainland the boys hide out in New Orleans for awhile. They are joined by a smooth-talking gambler who decides to try his luck on the run. The men have nowhere else to go so they all follow Jesse, who has old scores to settle. Steven Baldwin, plays Jay, his sidekick. Jay is a bit of a simpleton, but a happy-go-lucky guy who keeps the other guys motivated. They follow Jesse to Arizona, hoping not to attract too much attention because they've got a mad colonel on their heals trying to get them for desertion. At the same time they arrive at Jesse's home town where the townspeople are scared of an evil sheriff. Now Jesse and his men have one more thing to worry about. The townspeople look to Jesse to save them. Can he do it and keep out of the clutches of the army?
