Connie Doyle (Ricki Lake) has not been dealt the best in life. She is so unhappy with her home life that she takes off on her own at the tender age of eighteen. Her inexperience with true life lands her in a world of trouble. She meets a con artist jerk who purports to be her boyfriend. All Steve DeCunzo (Loren Dean) ends up doing is using her, getting her pregnant and the kicking her out onto the streets. She wanders aimlessly in the pouring rain with no where to go. As she enters the subway for shelter, she meets a kind beggar who tells her of a shelter in the northeast. She blows him off but he shows up again. This time she decides to take his advice with the intention to hop a train. She is shuffled onto a different destination and what a different destination it turns out to be!
She rides along she is lulled for a moment in exhaustion. This moment of repose is brief as the conductor comes round to claim tickets. Knowing that she has none, she flees from car to car. The breathless conductor catches up with her and she knows she is cornered. Luckily, a handsome good Samaritan named Hugh Winterbourne (Brendan Frasier) claims her for his wife and sends the conductor away. She is relieved and he asks her to go back to his cabin to meet his real new wife. He explains that his new bride is expecting and they are on their way home so that she may meet the family for the first time. The two ladies become instant friends and begin to compare stories. Connie is still drenched so Patricia Winterbourne (Susan Haskell) offers her some clothing. As Connie dresses, she admires Patricia's wedding band and Patricia lets her try it on. The next thing you know, Connie wakes up in the hospital with her new baby already born. She has not a clue where she is and is even more confused when everyone begins calling her Mrs. Winterbourne.
Eventually she pieces things together and is totally shocked at the big picture. The hospital staff console her regarding the devastating train wreck that took her new husband from her. At least she has the Winterbourne heir safe and sound. She tries to explain and even to make a hasty exit but the staff give her a sedative to keep her contained. Soon the family car arrives to take her home and the story just gets more amazing to her. The family is very well to do and Grace Winterbourne (Shirley MacLaine) is more than happy to welcome her new daughter-in-law into the family. Hugh's twin brother William (Brendan Frasier) is not so keen on the idea at first. He smells something funny going on and quickly catches on that this is probably a fraud. Grace is content with her new grandchild and insists that William behave with utmost respect. William goes about his investigations and eventually begins to fall in love with Connie. The actual moment of truth comes when they spend a wonderful day together. Everything goes well until they visit a jewelry shop and Connie signs the check her name instead of Patricia‘s. William is crushed at the truth of the lie but can't seem to find it in his heart to tell his mother. He really has fallen in love with Connie. So much so they he proposes. Connie at first runs but she is talked back by Paco (Miguel Sandoval), the family butler.
Marriage plans proceed but a nasty little quirk soon appears. The greedy rat Steve DeCunzo has seen Connie aka Patricia in the society pages and shows up at the rehearsal to blackmail her. The family gets wind that this guy means trouble and has him investigated. Steve winds up dead in a two bit motel, the police show up at the wedding and everyone, including Paco, confesses to the crime. Watch to see who ends up in the back of the patrol car.
