John Mason (James Stewart) is a budding New York attorney. Things seem to be on the upside as he happily walks down the street. He hardly watches where he is going as he admires the photo of a beautiful lady. When he enters the office, cheers and shouts abound. Everyone crowds around because Johnny is a new bridegroom. While he was away on business he met the love of his life and married her within a day or two. He passes the photo of his lovely new wife, Jane (Carole Lombard) around with pride. The festive mood dissipates instantly as their grumpy old boss, Judge Doolittle (Charles Coburn), walks in. He has always expected the attorney to marry his daughter and is not very pleased with Johnny's news.
Things don't get any better for John and Jane when they visit John's mother, Harriet Mason (Lucile Watson). She is an elderly drama queen and is obviously against her Johnny getting married. She adamantly expounds the importance of Jane having a career and the necessity of waiting for marriage. The old woman becomes faint when the couple announce that they are already married. Playing her part to the hilt, she tells the couple she will be moving out so that they may have their privacy. John and Jane insist that she stay and stay she does. They find out later that this was a big mistake.
Their luck does not change as their honeymoon is cut short before it even begins. Johnny's co-attorney , the smug Mr. Carter (Donald Briggs), shows up at their cabin door and tells him he must return to the office. It seems there is a problem with scheduling and a big case, Higgins vs. Higgins, is set for court the next week. Johnny has been working hard for a junior partnership and cannot miss the trial. Jane cries as their ship steams off into the sunset.
Home life continues to be grueling because Jane and Harriet do not get along very well. Harriet is always harping on her and Jane can't seem to do anything right. The apartment is small and everyone is cramped. It gets better and worse as Jane finds out she is going to have a baby. When John, Jr. (Bonnie Belle Barber) is born, there isn't any room for him. They set up his crib in the dining room as it is the only available space.
Johnny has been working diligently and is expecting the partnership news to come any day. When Old Man Doolittle requests a dinner party for a major announcement, the couple are hopeful that John will soon be promoted. They will then be able to move to a bigger apartment with a room for the baby. The dinner party is a disaster from the beginning and all hope is dashed as Doolittle announces Carter for the next partner.
The couple are crushed not knowing how they are going to get by. They begin to wonder if the whole thing has been a mistake. Maybe they shouldn't have gotten married or had a baby. New Year's Eve brings them to the breaking point. As other people revel, the two are remorseful and sad. Jane rushes out but in an instant she is back. Something is very wrong with the baby and he is rushed to the hospital. Sleeping in the drafty dining room has given him pneumonia and he will die unless he receives a special serum. The big problem is that the medicine is in Utah and there are blizzards all in between. The pilot wants five thousand dollars to fly in the bad weather. Of course, John and Jane don't have any money so John rousts Doolittle out of bed. He begs him for cash and the old penny pincher actually gets his checkbook. Another problem crops up as every hour counts. The weather has gotten worse and the pilot refuses to fly for any amount of money. A miracle occurs when a brave young pilot steps up. Conway (Eddie Quillan), says he will take the chance. Others watch as he flies into the snow, wondering if he will make it in time or even at all.
