Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Summer of '42
Hermie, Osky, and Benjie (Gary Grimes, Jerry Houser, and Oliver Conant) are male buddies in their mid-teens, brought by their families to spend the summer of 1942 on quiet Nantucket Island in New England. Their curiosity about all things sexual leads them to fumble with dating, and to secretly explore a book that introduces them to concepts like "foreplay."
Benjie's shy reluctance and Osky's crass bravado contrast sharply with Hermie's intense romanticism. From afar, Hermie loves a beautiful young woman named Dorothy, (Jennifer O'Neill,) who is living alone in an isolated beach house while her husband is away at war. He befriends her by making himself available to her for errands and conversations. She quickly takes a liking to him, and, despite their age difference, does not talk down to him, or let on if she notices his unintentionally ridiculous attempts to appear more sophisticated. She is not deliberately seductive, but her kindness deepens his crush.
