During the 1900's, Emily Dunning searches New York for a doctor to help her mother who has gone into labor. She finds Dr. Marie Yeomans. Although she's shocked to see a female doctor, she asks for her help. Dr. Yeomans delivers the baby and makes a friend in Emily. When Emily is older she tells Dr. Yeomans that she also wants to be a doctor. Dr. Yeomans warns against it, saying how difficult it is for women and how she still isn't respected. Emily is determined however, and goes to college to study. She meets fellow student, Ben Barringer. They fall in love, but when Ben proposes, Emily reminds him that they'll be studying at two different medical schools in different parts of the country. Ben says she should quit and having one doctor in the family is enough. Emily is insulted that he thinks she shouldn't go ahead with her dreams and they break up. She goes to medical school, but afterwards, she finds that she can't get an internship despite her high grades. When she's rejected by Dr. Seth Pawling, of the Gouvenator Hospital Dr. Yeomans calls in favor and gets her admitted.
Dr. Pawling warns her that he still feels women shouldn't be doctors. Also, most of the other interns give her a hard time. Emily is surprised to see Ben is also an intern there. When he sees how she handles the work, including a lot of ambulance duty, as well as the interns, he sees how much medicine means to her. They rekindle their romance. She also finds allies in the nurses. When the male doctors give up a dead, Emily and the nurses manage to revive him. A nurse leaks the story. Dr. Pawling isn't happy with the notariety, but when Emily complains of his treatment of her, he admits that she has done a good job.
An epidimic of typhoid begins. Dr. Yeomens comes to assist. She tells Emily not to forget her personal life. Dr. Pawling, who also has neglected his personal life and is divorced says the same thing. When Ben says he has an offer to study in Paris, but doesn't want to leave her. Emily knows how important it is for them to pursue their proffesional goals, but now she knows that their personal lives don't need to be rejected, so she tells him to go, but says she'll wait for him.
