| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Sugarland Express |
When petty criminal Lou Jean Poplin (Goldie Hawn) is released from prison, she discovers to her horror that her child, Langston (Harrison Zanuck), has been placed in foster care and that she has been labeled an unfit mother.
Breaking her still-imprisoned husband Clovis (William Atherton) out of jail, she resolves to get the baby back by any means necessary. When the two low-rent desperadoes choose the wrong rustbucket to hitch a ride in and then mistake a routine traffic stop for a bust, things quickly get out of hand, as they kidnap a state trooper (Michael Sacks) and steal his car.
Now on the road to Sugarland, Texas, where Baby Langston lives with his foster family, the trio are pursued by hundreds of state police, led by Captain Tanner (Ben Johnson), and find themselves becoming folk heroes and media sensations as the people of Texas rally to their cause.
