| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Honky Tonk Man |
Honky Tonk Man (1982) is a depression era film about an aging country singer named “Red Stovell” and his nephew Whit (Kyle Eastwood). It was directed by Clint Eastwood, who also stars in the main role. Stovell has tuberculosis, drinks and smokes a lot, and knows that he does not have long to live. But he has a dream that he wants to pursue before he dies: To sing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. He comes close after being invited to an audition. But before heading on to Nashville, Stovell decides to visit with his sister Emmy's family in Oklahoma.
He arrives there drunk in the middle of a dust storm that devastates his family's cotton fields. Nevertheless, he is given a warm welcome, and the family is proud to find out about his audition in Nashville. At the same time, Emmy worries about how Red would manage to get to Nashville given his sickness, his drinking, and his poor driving skills. For Red's 14-year-old nephew Whit, who does not wish to be "growing up to be a cotton picker all my life," this comes as the chance of his lifetime. He manages to persuade his hesitating parents to accompany Red to Nashville as his driver and caretaker. Thus, the two of them embark on their journey to Nashville.
