In the summer of 1978, young teen Xavier "X" Smith is a Chicagoan from the South Side frequently roller skate with his friends, Boo, Junior, Naps and Mixed Mike. They are the kings of Palisades Gardens, skating to the mixture of 70s popular music ranging from disco to R&B. When the group of friends found out of the local skating rink closed down, they find another rink called Sweetwater Roller Rink in the upscale side of town on the North Side. X and his friends will soon find out their skating routines will turn from pure enjoyment into a big competition when X collides with Sweetness, a popular skater on his side of town that believes he and his crew can dance or skate in circles around the newly visitor and his friends. But the competition becomes fierce when X finds out there is a $500 dollar reward for the winner who can sweep away their opponent in the skate off. X endure Sweetness alongside personal issues with his father, Curtis a former airplane designer that constantly works on his decease wife's car to pass the time by. But his son does not realize that his father is now umemployed. The biggest problem between the two is X's father spending more time with his sister than his own son. With the strained relationship he has with his father, the only place X can feel free and just have innocent fun is the roller rink.
