| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Crooklyn |
This dramtic semi-autobiographical film is set in early 1970's New York. The movie shows similarities of director Spike Lee's memories growing up with his parents and family.
Troy Carmichael, a nine year old girl wise before her time tells a tale throughout the film of both herself and family interacting with zany neighbors (one in particular that is reclusive and racist towards the children), personal family issues, but not to forget, the good times Troy and her siblings playing safely good ole games outside as other kids do. While there is great love within her family, she deals with four of her rowdy brothers Clinton, Wendell, Nate and Joseph who she often get into arguments with. Despite sibling problems, her mother Carolyn a school teacher knows just how to keep the family together. Her father Woody that once made decent money playing pop music, thrown it all away by becoming a now struggling musician who spends most of his time woring on more serious composition- without no income coming in the household. This often frustates Carolyn as she is carrying the weigh of keeping her kids in order as well being the finanical supporter in the family. At times Carolyn and Woody get into disagreements which Woody leaves the family from time to time. Later Troy is sent away for the holidays to visit relatives and a young cousin as she need someone of the same gender as herself to connect with.
