Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Sentinel
Pete Garrison (Douglas)is a veteran Secret Service Agent, who once took a bullet for President Reagan, and is now one of the bodyguards for President Ballantine's First Lady, Sarah Ballantine (Basinger.) He is also her secret lover. Agent Merriweather, his friend, has something to divulge to him, but is shot dead before they can get together. Informant Xavier tells Garrison that a White House insider is leaking security information to would-be assassins of the President. Soon, Xavier dies, too.

Dave Breckinridge (Sutherland), head of the Secret Service Protective Intelligence Division, orders all agents to take lie detector tests. Garrison fails his. It doesn't help his image that Breckinridge, once his friend, believes that he has had an affair with his wife; or that someone has sent Garrison blackmail photos of his affair with the First Lady, thereby luring him to a coffee shop with shady connections. Breckinridge and his rookie partner Jill Morin (Longoria) confront him as their prime suspect. He bolts, hides, and investigates for himself. Breckinridge tells his team that this is their worst nightmare - tracking one of their own, one who knows how they think and work. The seriousness of the threat is underlined when the President's decoy helicopter is blown up. When a goon tries to kill Garrison, Garrison follows him to his dwelling, kills him, gathers evidence, tells Morin, and leaves. Before a team can investigate, every shred of the evidence disappears. But he has learned that the bad guys plan to strike at an upcoming summit in Toronto, and, from a distance, entrusts Morin with this information.

Sarah Ballantine tells Breckinridge about the affair. Breckinridge follows Garrison to Toronto. Suspicion shifts. As the President is making a speech, one of his most trusted agents dramatically pushes him away from the podium, and, dodging bullets, gets him alone in a stairwell. The President's fate is now at the mercy of this agent's conscience and the teamwork of Breckinridge and Garrison.
