| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Westward the Women |
Directed by William A. Wellman in 1951. Roy E Whitman asks Buck Wyatt to help him to lead 150 women from Chicago to California in order to populate the valley where he established his ranch. In Chicago, women of different ages, origins and nationalities, agree to undertake this 2000 journey across the Rocky Mountains, Utah and the Californian desert. Wyatt asks them not to fool around with his men and asks the same thing from his men.
A few weeks later, almost all Wyatt's men have left the convoy, frightened off by the discipline set by the wagon master. The women must then learn how to handle the horses and the mules, how to use rifles to defend themselves against the Indians. They will have also to cry the loss of those who will unfortunately die during the journey under the arrows of the Indians, drowned in their own wagon or because of the accidents which are meant to happen during such a dangerous expedition.
