Three middle-aged Manhattan couples vacation together four times a year - spring, summer, fall and winter. The tight-knit group is shocked one spring weekend when unhappy and unsatisfied Nick Callan (Len Cariou) announces he will be divorcing his dreary wife Anne (Sandy Dennis). Jack Burroughs (Alan Alda) cannot believe his ears and urges Nick not to make any rash decisions, but Nick has decided already. He wants out. Jack spills the news to his wife, Kate (Carol Burnett), who is equally devastated. When the couples gather a few months later for their annual summer trip, they have trouble accepting the newly revitalized Nick and his bubbly younger girlfriend, Ginny Newley (Bess Armstrong). Nick and Ginny are alive, well, and anxious to prove it, an uncomfortable fact that the other couples cannot help overhearing within the small confines of their rented sailboat. Kate comments that while she is still very angry with Nick for what he did to Anne, she feels a bit envious watching people who are that much in love. Claudia Zimmer (Rita Moreno) wonders how the other couples lost that magic in their relationships. Claudia's husband, Danny (Jack Weston), assures her that they have lost nothing, yet she is doubtful. The feelings of jealousy, anger and insecurity carry over into their fall getaway. Ginny begins bad-mouthing Anne and Claudia abruptly sets her straight. Though Claudia immediately apologizes to Ginny, Danny cannot believe that his wife could be that cruel. While in the lobby of a Connecticut inn, the gang runs into Anne, which throws everyone into an awkward funk. Jack wants the group to examine and discuss their feelings, but Kate urges him to let things lie. Jack, who feels he now is in a sort of competition with Nick, gets very physical during a soccer game. Kate - furious with Jack over his behavior during the soccer game - is beginning to tire of planning the seasonal weekends and longs to vacation somewhere alone with Jack. The situation really comes to a head during their winter ski weekend when Ginny cannot hold her tongue any longer. It is finally time for the couples to examine and discuss their feelings …if they want to hold on to their friendship.
