Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Naked and the Dead
This movie, based on Norman Mailer novel, was directed by Raoul Walsh in 1958. The setting is a Pacific island during WWII. General Cummings's mission is to expel the Japanese forces out of this island. His aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Robert Hearn, a cynical, wealthy and blasé young officer, owes his current condition to his father's relations in Washington. After an argument with General Cummings, Hearn is transferred. He's now the commanding officer of Sergeant Sam Croft's platoon. Croft is a veteran soldier but brutal and cruel.

This platoon must now bring to fruition a crucial mission. Landed on the other side of the island, these men must approach the Japanese forces and pass on by radio all the informations they can get about the condition of the enemy army. Hearn sets with difficulty his authority on his men because of his inexperience and Croft's hostile demeanour. Hearn is wounded in an ambush and must be brought back to the seashore while Croft continues the mission in spite of the opposition of some of his men.
