| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Knack...And How to Get It |
Colin is an uptight London schoolteacher, watching the 1960's sexual revolution from the sidelines. By contrast, his tenant, Tolen, makes so many sexual conquests that he has a guest book in his room. Colin pictures women lining up on the stairs for the privilege of signing it. Torn between shock and jealousy, Colin asks for his advice. As Tolen rambles about establishing contact and domination, Colin's mind wanders to his own simple plan: To get a bed bigger than Tolen's. With the help of a talkative stranger named Tom - who has just moved into Colin's other spare room without permission, and is in the process of painting everything in it white - he searches for a colossal bed at the dump.
Across town, unworldly Nancy gets off of a bus with her luggage. Her search for the YWCA lands her everywhere but, including the dump. Tom befriends her easily, but Colin is shy. She helps them to float the bed down the river and wheel it through traffic to Colin's house - only to find that it is too big to budge up the stairwell. Tolen arrives, and can't resist demonstrating his flirting prowess on Nancy. She is warily attracted, but slaps him when he implies that he was just warming her up for Colin. But she melts for his apology, and accepts a ride on his motorcycle. Protective of her, Colin and Tom run after them to the park. Tolen's light kisses and caresses compel her to back away, yet ask for more. At his mere approach, she faints.
Colin and Tom find her on the ground. Tolen declares that he did nothing to her; that this is just one of the hazards of his fatal knack. But when Nancy comes to, she flattens his bike tires and traipses through the streets, chanting "rape" to anyone who will listen. The three follow her back to Colin's house, where she shuts herself into Tolen's room, undresses, plays Tolen's drums, writes in his guest book, and lies on his bed - still chanting "rape". As the three wait on the stairs for her next move, Tolen freezes at the suggestion that she is expecting him to rape her and he should get on with it. Disconcerted, he excuses himself to go to the Albert Hall, where he and his even more lascivious friend, Rory McBride, are having a reunion of all their former conquests. But the girls there surprise him with their cool reception. Back at the house, Colin is equally surprised when Nancy emerges in just her coat and tells him she thinks he is rugged and handsome, increasing his confidence level considerably.
