| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about A Better Place |
From executive producers Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier (“Good Will Hunting”) and first-time director Vincent Pereira, the unofficial View Askew (“Clerks”, “Chasing Amy”, “Dogma”) “historian”, comes this tense independent drama. After his father dies in a freak accident, Barret Michaelson (Robert DiPatri) and his mother relocate to New Jersey. On the first day at his new high school, Barret is harassed, mocked and almost physically attacked by a trio of bullies. Reclusive Ryan Walker (Eion Bailey) intervenes and a friendship rapidly develops. While Ryan is exceptionally bright, he is also tremendously disturbed, hailing from a dysfunctional family with a sordid history. Barret slowly begins to fret when Ryan's seemingly harmless philosophical discussions turn into increasingly sadistic rages. When Barret chooses to befriend the classmates Ryan scorns so much, threatened Ryan goes ballistic and desperately tries to draw Barret into hatred and violence.
