Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Lucas
When nerdy, brainy, puny, bug-collecting Lucas (Corey Haim) spies beautiful, redheaded Maggie (Kerri Green) playing tennis one summer afternoon, it is love-at-first-sight. At least it is for Lucas. They make a date to play tennis the next afternoon and afterwards, Maggie gives him a lift home. On the ride home, Lucas points to a group of football players practicing, claiming they are his friends. Maggie is skeptical and proceeds to tell Lucas her back-story. Maggie is the new girl in town, her parents having recently split up due to her father's infidelities. Maggie is anxious about starting school, especially since she does not know anyone. As Maggie pulls up at his luxurious mansion of a house, Lucas tells her if they spend the remaining weeks of summer vacation together, Maggie will at least know one person when school begins. Maggie agrees and together the unlikely duo plays tennis, venture on bug-collecting expeditions and enjoy a classic music concert … from a secret perch underneath the sewer. Though Maggie is unaware, Lucas finds himself falling more and more in love with her. When school finally starts, a bully humiliates Lucas during a back-to-school pep rally. Lucas is a good sport for a while, but when the teasing goes too far, he shamefully runs out of the auditorium. Maggie chases after him and convinces Lucas to go to the movies with her later that night to celebrate their friendship. While Lucas and Maggie are waiting in line at the candy counter, Lucas encounters Bruno (Tom Hodges), the bully from the pep rally. Bruno begins taunting Lucas but kind-hearted Cappie (Charlie Sheen) intervenes. Cappie (Charlie Sheen) is a hunky football player who Lucas once tutored when he was laid up with a football injury. During the film, Maggie spies Cappie kissing his beautiful cheerleader girlfriend, Alise (Courtney Thorne-Smith). Cappie notices Maggie watching him and the romantic sparks to begin to fly. With a warning from Lucas to stay away from superficial and shallow activities, Maggie decides to try out for the cheerleading squad anyway. Maggie's decision allows her and Cappie to become closer, something envious Alise (and Lucas) cannot tolerate. After Cappie and Alise split, depressed Cappie turns to Maggie for comfort, forcing Lucas to go solo to the homecoming dance. Adorable classmate and fellow band geek Rina (Winona Ryder) tries to console Lucas but to no avail. As oblivious as Maggie is to Lucas's affections, Lucas is also clueless when it comes to Rina's intentions. When Lucas spots Cappie and Maggie, sharing their first kiss later that night, Lucas dangerously decides to win Maggie back by going out for the football team.
