| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sink the Bismark |
The Bismark combines bigger guns with greater armor and higher speed than most other ships afloat. She could stand off a convoy and sink every ship in it in mere hours without even being scratched and possibly, because she would be so far out of range, that she might not even be fired upon.
The Bismark's primary purpose is to sink convoy ships from the United States and, if successful, to break the United Kingdom's back. With supplies and equipment dwindling, invasion seems closer. Churchill's given the order, “Sink the Bismark at any cost.” Captain Shepard's job is to martial his forces, find the Bismark and sink her.
He's assisted by Anne Davis (Dana Wynter), a female Royal Navy officer who's best described as a woman Friday (insulting to call her a girl, you have to see movie). She helps keep him on track and also helps him in his personal battles.
With actual combat footage and very few “changes to history”, this movie does an excellent job. One of my favorite parts is when one lookout turns to the other and, in describing the Bismark, says that she has armor on her decks so thick (he's either on a heavy cruiser or a battleship – can't remember which), that they might as well be tossing crumpets (British doughnuts) at her. The other wistfully says he wishes someone would toss “a few crumpets at me.”
