| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Meatballs |
Hot off the heels from his successful stint on television's “Saturday Night Live”, Bill Murray stars as a wacky but lovable head counselor in this hilarious send-up of summer camp, directed by Ivan Reitman (“Stripes“, “Ghostbusters“).
Murray is Tripper Harrison, the imaginative activities director at Camp North Star. Unlike the glamorous, one-thousand dollars a week Camp Mohawk across the lake - where wealthy campers are “awakened by servants bearing croissants and café au lait - Camp North Star is more modest, where it's “all the gruel you can eat” for breakfast. Tripper is “hoping to make your summer camp experience the best available … in this price range”. Tripper and his band of inept and libidinous counselors-in-training (CIT's), get ready to welcome a slew of young campers for what will be the wildest summer at Camp North Star.
Even if it is all in good fun, no one is safe from Tripper's crazy antics, including no-nonsense camp director Morty (Harvey Atkin) and fellow counselor Roxanne (Kate Lynch). If Tripper is not playing practical jokes on poor Morty then he is launching amorous attacks on Roxanne, ultimately wearing her down. Tripper bonds with Rudy (Chris Makepeace), a shy, depressed and lonely camper. Through nightly card games and daily jogs, Tripper gets Rudy to come out of his introverted shell. While the CIT's deal with whiny six year olds and know-it-all teenagers, they also tackle their own personal issues. Nerds Spaz (Jack Blum) and Larry (Keith Knight) are desperate to score as the more experienced Crockett (Russ Banham) tries to start a new relationship with Candace (Sarah Torgov). Camp North Star super couple of the previous summer, A.L. (Kristine DeBell) and Wheels, see if their romance is still intact.
After Tripper takes the CIT's on a scary but fun overnight canoe trip, it is time for the “Olympiad”, a traditional competition between North Star and the snobs from Camp Mohawk. At the last minute, North Star's famed runner breaks her leg, forcing Rudy to take her place with the hope of leading the camp to victory.
