| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Pistol: The Birth of a Legend |
This movie is about the basketball legend Pete Maravich. It begins when Pete is about 13, in the 8th grade and shows how his closest mentor and coach has always been his dad, who, by the way, happens to become the basketball coach at Pete's school.
Despite his age and his small size, Pete goes out for the basketball team and immediately faces skepticism from some of the other, taller players, who doubt his skills. Pete struggles through their jibes, hunkers down and practices his drills, though he can't help showing off just a little. This, of course, engenders a bit of jealousy among teammates, but when a critical game comes up, the question is whether Pete and the entire team can pull together.
Besides ably telling about Maravich's early years and showing some great basketball tricks and plays, this film also reveals some of the racial tensions going on in sports at the time.
