| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Pizza |
Cara-Ethyl's (Kylie Sparks) mother told her that a girl only needs three things on her birthday: presents, pizza and one good friend. The eccentric, brainy and overweight teen longs to “trip the light fantastic” on her eighteenth birthday, but finds it difficult to do so when no one shows up for her party. While seated at a dining room table festively decorated with party plates and a chocolate fudge mud birthday cake, Cara-Ethyl cleverly uses her voice to impersonate “Emily” so her temporarily blinded mother, Darlene (Julie Hagerty), will think that at least one guest is present. Darlene recently experienced an oil-splattering mishap while frying doughnuts and has both eyes heavily bandaged.
The pizza delivery guy, Matt Firenze (Ethan Embry), soon knocks on the door, armed with four pizzas intended for Cara-Ethyl's non-existent celebration. Thirty-year-old Matt can clearly see how lonely Cara-Ethyl is and kindly invites her outside to his truck to have a slice of pizza. Cara-Ethyl is determined to make her milestone birthday memorable and convinces Matt to let her join him as he makes his delivery rounds. Matt is hesitant at first but ultimately agrees, prompting the start of one hilarious escapade after the next.
The first stop is Matt's disgusting apartment, where Cara-Ethyl learns that he lives with two equally filthy roommates. Matt, a former high school hot shot who is having trouble conforming to the thirty-something lifestyle of marriage, babies and high-power careers, opts to reside with younger guys, hoping that their childish antics will remind him of his glory days.
Over the course of the evening‘s deliveries, Cara-Ethyl gets to sing for grumpy, alcoholic high school drama teacher Mr. Mitchell (Richard Easton), smokes her first cigarette, drinks her first beer, dances with Matt and she even comes face-to-face with the evil, popular clique who shunned her party.
